We are deeply grateful to the late Noelene Brown and the late Muriel Elizabeth Poppelwell, who left generous gifts in their wills to support wildlife.
A Legacy from Noelene Brown
In the words of her friend Susan; Noelene was a kind, caring and devoted daughter, sister and aunt whose love for animals was a defining part of her life.
She travelled the world extensively, delighting in witnessing its many sights, people, and cultures, and embracing the beauty and diversity she encountered along the way. Noelene’s compassion extended to wildlife conservation, where she proudly supported animal welfare causes, including being a Zoo Parent donor for Sun Bears, helping to protect and preserve the species. Her warmth, generosity, and curiosity for the world will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Noelene passed in February 2023 after a long battle with cancer and left a legacy in her Will to WIRES.

A Legacy from Muriel Poppelwell
In the words of her friends Tracie and Tina; Elizabeth lived an extraordinary life. Born in Suva Fiji, it is clear from the records and recollections shared she was a woman of depth, resilience, generosity and heart felt warmness.
Elizabeth was born in Fiji during a period when her father was working abroad. His passing when she was young brought her back to Australia, where she grew up and later built a distinguished career in the banking industry. Her professional achievements were significant, and her dedication to her work ultimately led her to the United Kingdom, where she was based for many years.
Beyond her career, Elizabeth embraced the world with curiosity and enthusiasm. She travelled extensively throughout Africa and Asia, collecting stories, experiences, and friendships along the way. Those who knew her speak fondly of the many travel tales she loved to share - stories that reflected her adventurous spirit and her genuine interest in people and cultures.
Elizabeth was also known for her kindness, generosity, and wonderfully dry sense of humour. These qualities shaped her relationships and left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.
Elizabeth also had a deep affection for animals. This was a constant thread throughout her life, and in keeping with her values, she directed a substantial portion of her estate to support animal care and rescue organisations. She was particularly fond of WIRES and often spoke of the outstanding work they do in caring for Australia’s wildlife. It was important to her that her legacy contribute to the wellbeing and protection of animals in need.
We are deeply grateful to Noelene and Muriel, and to all our legacy donors who each provide such profound support for native animals in desperate need of care. On their behalf – thank you!
