On the Frontline: How WIRES Responds to Natural Disasters and Wildlife Emergencies
Every day, wildlife across Australia relies on fast, skilled intervention to survive injury, illness and environmental stress. While large-scale disasters often capture public attention, much of this vital work happens quietly and continuously - and that’s where the WIRES Emergency Response Team (ERT) plays a crucial role.
WIRES Emergency Responders provide daily, hands-on support for wildlife in need, responding to some of our most critical and complex rescues. Trained in the rescue and immediate care of all Australian species, the team works closely with WIRES volunteers to support triage, transport and early-stage care - helping ensure animals receive timely treatment and the best possible chance of recovery.
Equipped with fully fitted wildlife ambulances, the ERT operates alongside local volunteers, veterinarians, land managers and emergency services every day, strengthening WIRES’ frontline response and supporting communities when wildlife is in crisis.
Responding to Major Emergency Events
In addition to this daily rescue work, the Emergency Response Team is called upon during large-scale emergencies, when sudden events overwhelm local capacity and rapid coordination is essential.
One of the earliest major deployments of the ERT in recent years was during the NSW flood crisis of November 2022. As waters engulfed towns and wildlife habitat, WIRES Emergency Response Vehicles and teams were sent across the state to attend urgent rescues, monitor key wildlife populations and support branch volunteers with welfare checks, supplemental food programs and equipment replacement.
In another significant emergency, WIRES launched a targeted response to assist massive numbers of rainbow lorikeets affected by Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome in northern NSW. This seasonal condition causes paralysis and an inability to fly, leaving hundreds of birds in distress daily. In response, WIRES established a Lorikeet Drop-Off and Triage Centre in Grafton, with emergency responders, wildlife ambulances and veterinary support on site to triage and treat affected birds.
These responses demonstrate the breadth of situations the ERT tackles - from extreme weather to disease outbreaks - each requiring fast action, strong collaboration and expert care. The team are currently on high alert during the current extreme heat we are experiencing across multiple states and will be there to support wildlife as required.
Nationwide Coverage Thanks to Supporters
WIRES’ growing emergency response capability has only been possible due to the generosity of supporters who help fund vehicles, training and dedicated personnel across the country. Our expanded ERT now covers a greater area:
The team of on-the-ground responders are supported by office-based coordinators to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
