Disentangling the Long-Term Effects of Marine Debris on Australian Fur Seals
WIRES launched its Research Grants Program in 2022, following the Black Summer Bushfires, to invest in research supporting the wildlife sector, nationally. This particular grant was awarded to Monash University who created a research program that has advanced the detection and understanding of marine debris entanglement in Australian fur seals. A survey consisting of 54 drones using innovative dual colour–thermal imaging, was implemented as an effective, non-invasive method for monitoring entanglement and injury.
The team collected physiological and behavioural data from both entangled and non-entangled seals, revealing the significant impacts of entanglement on health, condition, and survival. Satellite tracking uncovered previously undocumented long-distance pup dispersal, highlighting the broader conservation value of rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
They also focused on knowledge sharing and capacity building — presenting findings at scientific conferences and conducting international workshops with entanglement responders. Scientific publications are currently in preparation to ensure wide dissemination of results.
This program has improved entanglement detection, deepened understanding of its long-term effects, and underscored the global relevance of effective response strategies. WIRES funding has been instrumental in both enhancing local conservation and positioning this work as a model for addressing marine debris entanglement worldwide.
