Discover the seven species of sea turtles that grace the world's oceans and how you can help to protect these ancient marine reptiles.

For more than 100 million years, marine turtles have travelled the world's oceans, surviving mass extinctions and shaping marine ecosystems long before humans appeared. Today, these remarkable reptiles continue to migrate across thousands of kilometres of open ocean, returning with astonishing precision to the very beaches where they hatched decades earlier.

Australia is one of the world's most important countries for marine turtles, providing internationally significant nesting beaches, feeding grounds and migration corridors. Six of the world's seven marine turtle species occur in Australian waters, with five species regularly recorded in New South Wales.

Despite their resilience over millions of years, marine turtles now face unprecedented threats from pollution, coastal development, climate change, boat strikes, marine debris and fishing interactions. Every turtle plays a role in maintaining healthy oceans, making their conservation essential for the future of Australia's marine environments. 

Why marine turtles matter

Marine turtles are considered keystone species because their daily activities help maintain healthy coastal and marine ecosystems.

Green turtles graze seagrass meadows, encouraging fresh growth and improving habitat for dugongs, fish and countless other smaller marine animals. Hawksbill turtles feed primarily on sponges, preventing them from overwhelming coral reefs and allowing corals to thrive. Leatherback turtles consume large quantities of jellyfish, helping to maintain ecological balance in ocean food webs. Even turtle nests contribute nutrients back into coastal dune systems, supporting beach vegetation and wildlife.

Healthy turtle populations are often an indicator of healthy oceans.

Australia's marine turtles

Australia is home to six of the world's seven marine turtle species, making it one of the most significant countries for turtle conservation globally. 

The only species not naturally found in Australian waters is the Kemp's Ridley turtle, which is restricted primarily to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. 

Green Turtle

Chelonia mydas

One of Australia's most recognised marine turtles, the Green Turtle is commonly encountered in tropical and subtropical waters and regularly visits the NSW coastline. Adults spend much of their lives grazing on seagrass meadows and algae, playing a critical role in maintaining productive coastal habitats.

Green turtles undertake extraordinary migrations between feeding areas and nesting beaches, sometimes travelling several thousand kilometres. Females return to the same region where they hatched to lay their eggs, relying on the Earth's magnetic field to navigate across vast ocean distances.

Did you know?

Although called 'Green Turtles', their shells (carapace) are usually brown or olive. Their name comes from the green colour of fat beneath their shell.

Loggerhead Turtle

Caretta caretta

Named for its unusually large, powerful head, the Loggerhead Turtle is one of Australia's most iconic marine reptiles. These turtles are well adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey such as crabs, molluscs and sea urchins using their exceptionally strong jaws. Loggerheads occur along Australia's eastern, western and northern coastlines and are one of the species most frequently found in New South Wales.

Adult Loggerheads undertake impressive migrations between feeding grounds and nesting beaches, with females returning every few years to lay their eggs. While the largest nesting populations are found in southern Queensland and Western Australia, juvenile and adult Loggerheads regularly forage in the coastal waters of New South Wales.

Loggerhead populations have experienced significant declines over the past century due to fishing interactions, habitat degradation and marine pollution, making ongoing conservation efforts vital for their recovery.

Did you know?

A Loggerhead's head is so powerful that it can easily crush the shell of crabs, whelks and conchs, allowing it to feed on prey that many other marine animals cannot.

Hawksbill Turtle

Eretmochelys imbricata

With its beautifully patterned shell and distinctive bird-like beak, the Hawksbill Turtle is considered one of the most striking marine turtle species. Primarily found on tropical coral reefs, Hawksbills use their narrow, pointed beaks to reach into crevices and extract sponges, an important part of their diet.

By feeding on fast-growing sponges, Hawksbills help to prevent them from overwhelming corals, supporting the health and diversity of reef ecosystems. Although they are most common throughout northern Australia, Hawksbills are occasionally recorded along the northern coast of New South Wales, particularly during warmer months.

Historically, Hawksbills were heavily exploited for their ornate shells (carapaces), which were used to make jewellery and decorative items. Today, international protection has reduced this trade, but habitat loss and climate change continue to threaten the species.

Hawksbill Turtles are one of the few animals able to safely eat certain toxic reef sponges that are harmful to many other marine species.

Olive Ridley Turtle

Lepidochelys olivacea

The Olive Ridley Turtle is the smallest of Australia's marine turtles, recognised by its rounded, olive-green shell (carapace) and highly adaptable lifestyle. It inhabits tropical and subtropical oceans around the world and is most commonly found in northern Australian waters, although individuals are occasionally recorded much further south, including in New South Wales.

Olive Ridleys feed on a varied diet that includes crustaceans, jellyfish, molluscs, fish and algae, allowing them to thrive in a range of marine habitats from coastal waters to the open ocean.

Around the world, this species is famous for a remarkable nesting behaviour known as arribada, where thousands of females come ashore together just over a few nights to lay their eggs. This extraordinary spectacle is one of nature's largest wildlife gatherings, although it does not occur in Australia.

Did you know?

Some Olive Ridley nesting beaches can host tens of thousands of turtles arriving together during a single nesting event. This is called an arribada.

Leatherback Turtle

Dermochelys coriacea

The Leatherback Turtle is unlike any other marine turtle. Rather than having a hard shell made of bony plates, its body is covered by a thick, leathery skin with seven distinctive ridges running from head to tail. It is also the largest living turtle on Earth, with some individuals growing over two metres long and weighing more than 600 kilograms.

Leatherbacks spend most of their lives in the open ocean, travelling extraordinary distances across entire ocean basins. They regularly dive deeper than 1,000 metres in search of jellyfish, their preferred food, and can tolerate colder waters than any other sea turtle, thanks to specialised adaptions that help retain body heat.

Although Leatherbacks are only occasional visitors to Australian waters are rarely seen off the New South Wales coast, their vast migrations connect Australia's oceans with ecosystems across the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Leatherback Turtles can dive deeper than almost any other marine reptile, reaching depths of over one kilometre in search of food.

Flatback Turtle

Natator depressus

The Flatback Turtle is unique to Australia, and the waters of southern Papua New Guinea, making it the country's only endemic marine turtle. As its name suggests, it has a noticeably flatter shell (carapace) than other sea turtles, with upturned edges that give it a distinctive appearance.

Unlike other marine turtles that migrate across entire oceans, Flatbacks generally remain within Australia's continental shelf, spending their lives in relatively shallow coastal waters. They nest exclusively on Australia's northern beaches and are not naturally found in New South Wales. 

Flatback hatchlings are also unique. Instead of drifting in ocean currents during their early years like most sea turtles, young Flatbacks remain in Australia's coastal waters, where they continue to grow in protected habitats.

Flatback turtles don't nest anywhere else in the world. They are one of Australia's truly unique marine animals.

Kemp's Ridley Turtle

Lepidochelys kempii

The Kemp's Ridley Turtle is the world's rarest marine turtle and is not naturally found in Australian waters. Native to the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Atlantic Ocean, it is recognised by its small size, rounded shell (carapace) and preference for shallow coastal habitats.

Like the Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridleys are known for spectacular mass nesting events, where thousands of females emerge simultaneously to lay their eggs. During the twentieth century, the species experienced dramatic declines due to egg collection, accidental capture in fisheries and habitat loss. Intensive conservation efforts have helped stabilise some populations, although it remains one of the world's most threatened sea turtles.

Including the Kemp's Ridley alongside Australia's six resident species highlights the global diversity of marine turtles and the international importance of marine conservation.

Kemp's Ridley Turtles are the smallest sea turtle species in the world, with adults typically weighing less than 50 kilograms. 

Life in the ocean

Marine turtles have one of the most remarkable life cycles in the animal kingdom. 

After hatching beneath a warm sand beach, hatchlings emerge mostly at night and instinctively race towards the brightest horizon, the ocean. This short journey is often their most dangerous, with birds, crabs and other predators taking many hatchlings before they reach the water.

Those that survive enter an oceanic phase, drifting with currents for several years before settling into coastal feeding grounds. Depending on the species, turtles may not reach maturity until they are between 20 and 50 years old.

Adult females eventually return to nest on beaches, often laying several clutches of eggs during a single breeding season before disappearing back into the ocean.

This remarkable cycle repeats over decades, with some turtles believed to live well beyond 70 years.

Masters of navigation

One of the greatest mysteries of marine turtles is their incredible ability to navigate.

Research suggests turtles use a combination of the Earth's magnetic field, ocean currents, wave direction and even chemical cues to locate feeding grounds and nesting beaches with extraordinary precision.

Satellite tracking has revealed migrations exceeding 3,000 kilometres between Australia's northern nesting beaches and feeding areas throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

Marine Turtles in New South Wales

While many of Australia's most important marine turtle nesting sites occur in northern Australia, the NSW coastline provides important feeding and developmental habitat for marine turtles.

Green and Loggerhead Turtles are the most commonly encountered turtles along the NSW coast, particularly during warmer months. Hawkesbill, Olive Ridley and Leatherback Turtles are less common, but are occasionally recorded, especially offshore.

Important habitats include:

  • Seagrass meadows
  • Rocky reefs
  • Estuaries
  • Offshore waters
  • Coastal islands

Ocean warming is also influencing turtle distribution, with some species being recorded further south than historically observed.

WIRES and Marine Turtle rescue

When a marine turtle is found injured, sick, entangled or stranded along the NSW coast, a timely rescue can make all the difference. WIRES wildlife rescuers respond to marine turtle incidents and provide the initial care and support the animal needs.

WIRES works with Taronga Zoo to support the rehabilitation of rescued marine turtles. Following rescue, turtles can receive specialised veterinary assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, helping them to recover before they are returned to the wild when they are fit and healthy enough to do so.

Through WIRES' National Wildlife Training Courses, the Sea Turtle Rescue and Transport course helps people develop the knowledge and practical skills when they encounter marine turtles in distress.

Key threats facing marine turtles

Marine turtles have survived for millions of years, yet today's human-driven pressures present unprecedented challenges.

Plastic pollution

Floating plastics often resemble jellyfish or seagrass, leading turtles to accidentally ingest bags, balloons and other debris. Ingested plastics can cause starvation, internal injuries and other health issues for turtles.

Fishing interactions

Entanglement in fishing gear remains one of the leading causes of injury and mortality. Lost fishing line and abandoned crab traps continue to pose risks long after they are discarded. 

Boat strikes

As turtles surface to breathe, collisions with vessels can result in severe shell fractures and internal injuries, particularly in bus coastal waterways.

Coastal development

Urbanisation, artificial lighting and beach modification can discourage nesting females and disorient turtle hatchlings attempting to reach the ocean.

Climate change

Rising sand temperatures influence turtle hatchling sex ratios, because the sex of the turtle is determined by the temperature of the nest. Warmer nests predominantly produce females, while cooler nest produce mostly males. This potantially affects future population balance.

Sea level rise and increased storm activity may also reduce available nesting habitat. 

Conservation in Australia

Australia protects all marine turtle species under national environmental legislation, while many populations are also recognised under international conservation agreements.

Across the country, researchers, Traditional Owners, government agencies, volunteers and community organisations work together to:

  • monitor nesting beaches
  • rescue injured turtles
  • reduce marine debris
  • track migration using satellite technology
  • restore critical habitats
  • improve fisheries management
  • educate communities

These collaborative efforts are helping improve our understanding of turtle populations while protecting habitats for future generations.

How you can help

Every action, no matter how small, can contribute to marine turtle conservation.

You can help by:

  • reducing single-use plastics
  • disposing of fishing line properly
  • keeping beaches clean
  • not driving on nesting beaches
  • reducing the use of artificial lights on and around nesting beaches
  • respecting nesting turtles and hatchlings
  • reporting injured or stranded turtles to local wildlife authorities
  • supporting marine conservation initiatives

These actions can help ensure future generations can continue to share Australia's oceans with these extraordinary animals.
