Wildlife Disease & Illness Information
WIRES provides comprehensive information on key wildlife diseases to increase public awareness and safety and improve wildlife outcomes. The organisation educates the public on the signs, causes, and transmission methods of various wildlife diseases, such as Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome (LPS), Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), and Beak and Feather Disease (BFD).
WIRES emphasises the importance of safety precautions, including vaccination requirements where required for those working with wildlife, as well as the proper procedures for handling injured or sick animals. We also offer guidance on how to respond in case of exposure to certain diseases, stressing the need for prompt medical attention when necessary.
WIRES ensures that all rescuers are properly trained to safely handle wildlife. WIRES is also actively involved caring for animals impacted by specific diseases such as chlamydia affecting koalas and life-saving mange treatment for wombats.
