MULLYANG

Mullyang, WIRES' Wildlife Centre in Fitzroy Falls, is primarily focused on the rehabilitation of raptors which are birds of prey.

Named by the local Aboriginal Gundungurra elder, Kazan Brown, Mullyang was officially launched in March 2025 and marks the beginning of a new chapter in raptor rehabilitation for WIRES. Having received 1,737 calls for raptor rescue advice and assistance in the last financial year, this asset will be invaluable for birds of prey, WIRES volunteers, and the broader sector.

The creation of the centre was originally the vision of Peggy McDonald OAM CF, who began working with raptors in 1992. Peggy travelled to Abu Dhabi to visit the Falcon Hospital for the first time in 2012 and returned to Australia with the vision to create world class facilities in NSW. Peggy was a WIRES volunteer at the time and her plans attracted many supporters, enabling the construction of the largest raptor rehabilitation aviary in Australia. Over subsequent years Peggy partnered with numerous organisations supported by national and international donors to expand the rehabilitation assets on site, eventually creating the largest free flight aviary complex of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

WIRES acknowledges the outstanding contribution to raptor rehabilitation made by Peggy and honours her legacy. WIRES also sincerely thanks Nigel and Lisa Barlow for enabling WIRES to purchase the property to protect the site in perpetuity for the benefit for wildlife.

For wildlife groups with raptors in care that would benefit from access to the facility pre-release, please email enquiries to mullyang@wires.org.au.
