Veterinary 
 Training Hub 

Veterinary staff are critical to wildlife rehabilitation, assisting wildlife carers across Australia with sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. To help support industry professionals continue to accept, assess and treat wildlife, WIRES has developed a range of resources for veterinary staff and students, in consultation with WIRES Wildlife Veterinarians.

It is free to enrol, and the Veterinary Training Hub contains a wide range of free and subsidised training modules and resources. A range of the modules available can also be completed for essential continuing professional development (CPD) points.

Who can enrol? 

The hub is open to any veterinary staff actively working in a clinic (including veterinarians, vet nurses & vet technicians) as well as students enrolled in a recognised veterinary related program.

What type of training is available in the WIRES Veterinary Training Hub? 

The Veterinary Training Hub contains essential training modules that are provided free of charge. These modules cover the fundamentals of treating wildlife in a clinic and managing pain in wildlife. Topics include WHS, record keeping, why wildlife come into care, the impacts of stress, creating a wildlife friendly clinic, examination, diagnostics, assessing and managing pain, working with wildlife carers, appropriate medications for wildlife, and more.

The Veterinary Training Hub also contains a range of free downloadable materials such as relevant state and territory resources to support with establishing wildlife compliant clinics, examination and treatment booklets, and practical technique videos. 

For those wishing to further develop their wildlife skills, a range of subsidised modules are also available that explore housing, husbandry, and handling of specific wildlife species in more detail, including advanced koala related modules and flying-fox heat stress events. 

Additional content will be added to the hub on an ongoing basis and we encourage feedback from veterinary professionals regarding specific topics or wildlife species they wish to learn more about.
