Treating Wombats with Mange using Cydectin and Bravecto
WIRES online mange treatment course is designed to help those actively involved in caring for wombats with mange.
As the course is focused on treating animals in situ, any WIRES volunteer is eligible to do the course. It is not necessary for volunteers to have completed WIRES Wombat Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release Course first.
Mange is a skin infection caused by a parasitic mite. The disease is known by different names for different species. Although mange can affect different Australian mammals, it is best known for its often devastating impact on individual wombats and wombat populations across Australia.
As ongoing treatment is required for a period of time, mange infection in wild wombats can be difficult to treat. However, if left untreated likely symptoms are; severe scratching which can cause open wounds, hair loss, skin crusting and discolouration and weight loss. Death can subsequently result from the animal's suppressed immune system or secondary infections.
WIRES has obtained a sub permit enabling WIRES volunteers to treat wombats suffering mange with Cydectin and another permit for Fluralaner (Bravecto).
This mange treatment course teaches people the correct way to use Cydectin and Bravecto, as per the APVA permit conditions. The course also contains general information about mange and downloadable guides to constructing burrows flaps.
After doing the course, WIRES volunteers that would like to get involved in treatment, in branches that are rescuing and caring for wombats, need to this in conjunction with their Wombat Coordinator and Branch Executives.
