Biodiversity Month is held in September each year and aims to promote the importance of protecting, conserving and improving biodiversity both within Australia and across the world.
The aim is to ensure our important environments and habitats are preserved for future generations of Australians to appreciate and enjoy.
At WIRES, we witness firsthand the richness of Australia's wildlife.
Each year, our dedicated volunteers respond to thousands of rescue requests, assisting a diverse array of native species. For instance, in the last financial year, WIRES received over 200,000 calls and provided rescue advice and assistance for over 140,000 animals.
This includes iconic species such as koalas, kangaroos, and wombats, as well as a vast array of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Our work underscores the vast diversity of Australia's wildlife and the critical need to protect it.
Biodiversity contributes to the resilience of ecosystems, enabling them to withstand environmental changes and recover from disturbances.
Despite this, Australia's biodiversity is increasingly threatened by habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and invasive species.
WIRES is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and preservation of Australian wildlife. Our efforts not only aid individual animals but also contribute to the broader goal of conserving biodiversity.
By educating the public, supporting habitat preservation, and collaborating with other conservation organisations, we strive to ensure that Australia's unique species continue to thrive for generations to come.
Protecting biodiversity is a collective responsibility. Here are ways you can contribute:
Create Wildlife-Friendly Spaces: Design your garden to include native plants that provide food and shelter for local wildlife.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Minimize waste to lessen habitat pollution and degradation.
Support Conservation Efforts: Volunteer with or donate to organizations like WIRES that are actively involved in wildlife rescue and habitat preservation.
Stay Informed: Educate yourself and others about the importance of biodiversity and the challenges it faces.
By taking these steps, we can all play a part in safeguarding the rich tapestry of life that makes up Australia's biodiversity.
