Assisting wildlife in need is incredibly rewarding: Join the WIRES Rescue 101 Program

Every day, vulnerable native animals are rescued from injury, illness and life-threatening situations - and the need for help is growing. Just in the past year, WIRES has responded to over 160,000 urgent calls for help!

For this reason, we are extremely grateful for our growing team of Rescue 101 volunteers. These are volunteers who've completed a short WIRES-approved training course in basic handling, containment and transport of native animals requiring veterinary assessment and care.

They provide invaluable support to our 3,000+ volunteer carers, because they help to get injured animals out of danger and into safety, as quickly as possible. This reduces the workload of some of our busiest volunteers, enabling them to focus their time on rehabilitation and care, and the complex rescue of species that require more advanced training. It also helps to reduce the waiting times for hundreds of animals needing urgent rescue and transportation.

Just in the past three months, our amazing rescue 101 volunteers have assisted more than 1,042 native animals in distress, providing them with a prompt rescue into care, when every minute truly counts.

If you have a small amount of time each week and you’d like to provide some hands-on help to wildlife, our Rescue 101 Course could well be of interest. R101 volunteers receive WIRES-approved training in the basic handling, containment and transport of native animals requiring veterinary assessment and treatment. This includes commonly rescued species such as Rainbow Lorikeets, Magpies, Ringtail Possums and Blue-tongued Lizards.

As a R101 volunteer, you’ll be playing a vitally important role, by responding to rescues and assisting with the safe transport of injured native animals to veterinary care. On behalf of the many hundreds of native animals, you’ll help - thank you so much!
