WIRES Advanced Species Courses are available to members upon completion of the Rescue and Immediate Care Course.  These courses offer in-depth knowledge and practical guidance tailored to specific species and rescue or care situations, so you can respond with confidence and compassion when wildlife needs you most. 

Please note: Completion of the Rescue and Immediate Care Course (RICC) is required before enrolling in any of these specialist courses. This foundational training ensures you understand the principles of wildlife rescue and care, and sets you up for success in more advanced situations.

Each course is designed by experienced wildlife carers, veterinarians and subject matter experts. 

You’ll learn species-specific handling, housing, first aid, rehabilitation and release considerations, plus critical welfare and safety protocols.

Frog Care – Learn to safely care for Australia’s unique and delicate amphibians. 

Koala Rescue – Understand how to safely rescue and support koalas in distress. 

Lizard & Turtle Care – Explore best practice rehabilitation for reptiles in need. 

Mange Treatment - Get trained to support wombats suffering from mange with approved treatment protocols. 

Raptor Rescue – Build the specialist skills needed to handle and assist birds of prey. 

Sea Snake Rescue – Gain the knowledge to manage sea snake rescues. To be eligible for this course, participants must first complete snake handling training. 

Sea Turtle Rescue – Learn how to respond to sick or injured sea turtles safely. 

Seabird Care – Understand how to stabilise, rehabilitate and release seabirds. 

Small Mammals – Support the rescue and rehabilitation of bandicoots, native rodents and other native small mammals. 

Blended Specialist Courses:

Each of the following courses includes both self-paced online learning and a practical, face-to-face training component delivered by experienced trainers. You’ll develop safe handling techniques, care protocols, species identification and housing guidelines.

  • Avian Care – Learn to care for a variety of native birds with safe handling and rehabilitation techniques.

  • Microbats & Flying-foxes – Understand the unique needs of microbats and flying-foxes, including rescue, care and public health considerations.

  • Possum & Glider Care – Explore best-practice care for possums and gliders, including joey care.

  • Raptor Rehabilitation – Take your skills to the next level with in-depth training in raptor assessment, rehabilitation and release.
