Helping wildlife after severe storm event or floods

Strong winds and heavy rain can put wildlife under extreme stress.

After the storm has passed and it is safe to do so, check under trees for fallen chicks, nests or injured birds.
Some birds will be waterlogged/sodden/saturated with water and unable to fly. Gently wrap them in a small towel or soft cloth with no loose threads (they can become entangled) and pick them up..
Take them inside and place in a ventilated box large enough for the bird to stand, then place a soft cloth on the bottom of the box and let the bird warm up and dry out in a quiet environment. If there are any clear/prominent injuries, call the WIRES rescue line immediately on 1300 094 737, or take to a nearby vet. Our rescue team can advise on the location of wildlife vets in your area.
Do not feed or offer water to the bird. If you feel the animal needs food or water, call for advice first. Incorrect food or feeding can cause serious issues.
Small possums and gliders can be displaced, and you may find them under trees after a severe storm. Call our rescue line for advice or take them to a nearby vet.
Check any fallen trees, especially older trees with hollows, as a wild animal could have called that hollow home.
Be vigilant on our roads and look out for wildlife. Many will be distressed and flee rising floodwaters. Take care and stay safe.
