Overnight help

WIRES NSW Rescue Office operates 365 days a year on 1300 094 737.

If you need rescue help after hours you can take injured wildlife, where it is safe to do so, to your nearest 24 hour vet.

If you let WIRES know which vet you’ve taken the animal to, we will follow up directly with the vet to bring the animal into care after it’s been vet assessed and received any essential treatment.

If you cannot transport the animal to a vet and it’s safe to do so, please contain them in a safe, quiet, dark, warm place e.g. wrapped in a towel in a ventilated box with access to a small amount of water until the morning. You can fill in a Rescue Form and you will be called back in the morning.

While waiting for a rescuer native animals should always be kept in quiet, dark place away from people and pets to minimise their stress and improve their chance of survival.

Some regional WIRES volunteers take rescue calls overnight. If there is a local regional number for your area you’ll find it on our Branch Contacts page.

If you find seriously injured animals such as kangaroos or wombats on the side of the road overnight you can also contact the local Police and they will assist.
