If you would like to partner with WIRES on a special project, there are lots of opportunities to help native animals in unique ways.
With extremely high annual rescue call volumes, 27 Branches and hundreds of animals needing help every week, WIRES are constantly looking for ways to provide more support to our volunteers and to increase our ability to rescue more animals faster and care for more native animals simultaneously.
You can partner with WIRES on smaller projects to assist local branches or major projects to impact all areas.
If you are interested in discussing opportunities for your organisation, foundation, family or yourself, please email your details to support@wires.org.au.
Building flight aviaries
Many branches could use more flight aviaries as these give our volunteers the ability to test the flight fitness of native birds before release. Flight aviaries help birds to build their flight fitness up to the level needed for survival in the wild, while still protected. They allow them to gradually change to their wild diet as food supplements are reduced. They also allow them to interact with other birds in the aviary as they would in the wild. Pricing for aviaries varies immensely depending on their size. Average costs for smaller flight aviaries range from $2,500 - $10,000 and a major raptor aviary would cost around $40,000.
Wildlife facilities
There are many other project possibilities to assist local areas with facilities to help manage animals in care e.g. constructing pre-release enclosures. We have also been given some money to go towards a koala facility, that particular facility is expected to cost about $15,000, we have been given $5,000 and need to raise another $10,000 to construct it and we would build multiple facilities when possible.
Sponsoring an existing project
WIRES wildlife rescue app was launched in June 2014 and has been downloaded by over 11,000 unique users, it costs $2,000 to host and support the app annually keeping it available for the public and a sponsor to assist with this would be greatly appreciated. Another major ongoing special project we have is raising money specifically for wildlife food. It also costs a lot of money to feed wildlife in care, over $200,000 a year and WIRES need sponsors to help promote or support our annual Wildlife Food Fund where 100% of funds donated are spent on food for wildlife.
Technology projects
To rescue more animals faster, to be able to care for more animals better and to be able to educate more community members and professionals about wildlife, WIRES is dedicated to continuous improvement. We are constantly working to improve our processes so that they are more efficient. Late 2014 WIRES implemented a new rescue communications system that has enabled us to radically improve the way we communicate rescues out to available volunteers. We can now contact instantly all trained and available volunteers in a set area which has significantly helped us to consistently rescue faster than before. We have also identified many other opportunities to improve our wildlife services when we are able to implement IT upgrades to existing systems.
