Threatened Species Day

Monday, September 07, 2015

Koala“Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct. In NSW alone there are close to 1000 animal and plant species at risk of extinction.” NSW Office of Environment & Heritage

In the last 18 months WIRES has helped over 2,500 animals from the following threatened species: powerful owls, grey-headed flying-foxes, koalas, spotted-tailed quolls, eastern pygmy-possums and mountain pygmy-possums.

Take action this Threatened Species Day, become a WIRES Virtual Carer today.

In just the last two weeks our volunteers have rescued a Bush Stone-curlew (listed as vulnerable in NSW), a Rufous Bettong (listed as vulnerable in NSW) in addition to 8 Koalas, 3 Grey-headed flying-foxes and 1 Eastern Pygmy-possum. All these animals are listed as vulnerable to extinction.
