Marki is one wombat rehabilitated by WIRES carer Anna. When he came into her care, he was suffering from a serious case of Mange.

Caused by mites, Mange causes itchy sores all over their body, fur loss, and blindness. Unless infected animals are found and treated in the early stages, their health can become so severely compromised it is too late for treatment and they die an agonising death.

Mange is spreading across Australia and slowly destroying entire populations of wombats.

The condition can be treated successfully if caught early enough, but it’s going to take more training, more licensed volunteers, more equipment, and more medication to ensure this species has a brighter future.
