Kingfishers rescued in unprecedented numbers

Friday, February 17, 2017

Over the last 6 weeks WIRES has received calls to help an unprecedented number of Kingfishers across the Sydney area.

These beautiful birds are extremely susceptible to stress and we need your help to ensure as many as possible are able to be returned to the wild.

If you find a kingfisher needing assistance please gently cover with a light cloth and scoop very gently into a box already lined with a towel. It is important that you do not handle these birds more than is absolutely necessary to contain them. Once the bird is contained please either transport immediately to a nearby vet and/or call our rescue line 1300 094 737 to let us know.

The contained bird should especially not be handled by children and not handled for photographs. It should be kept well away from noise and domestic pets. Do not attempt to feed. Any of these things can cause the bird to die very quickly.

While we are unsure as to the exact reason so many are currently being rescued we believe it may have to do with food shortages resulting from the extreme weather experienced this year. This means the birds may already be underweight and unwell and they will need urgent specialist treatment.
